Unique functionality for removal, separation, and recovery of ocean plastics and debris

SurfCleaner - a unique skimmer separator hybrid
for ocean debris and plastics

The SurfCleaner SCD is currently under development, and will be a fully automated, solar powered device for collection and separation of marine litter. Capable of collecting plastics, as well as other substrates such as seaweed and harmful algae, without harming the local fauna. The collected waste can be transformed into biocoal through a new process which greatly reduces cost.

A growing, global problem with marine litter

Marine pollution is a growing global problem that includes chemicals, particles, industrial, agricultural and residential waste, noise, plastic debris, and the spread of invasive organisms in oceans and lakes, and where the presence of plastic debris in particular has received a lot of attention lately.

In the EU alone, 150,000 to 500,000 tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans every year. Marine litter also causes serious economic damage for coastal communities. The potential cost across EU for coastal and beach cleaning was assessed at almost €630 million per year, while the cost to the fishing industry amounts to almost €60 million.
