Pioneer of world’s first water skimmer separator, SurfCleaner, gears up for World Water Week 2022

Swedish water treatment specialist and pioneer of the world’s first skimmer separator device, SurfCleaner, is gearing up for World Water Week 2022.

The seminal event, which kicked off on Monday, August 23, is regarded as a leading global conference for the water sector, and has been hosted by Stockholm every year since 1991.

A key part of this year’s schedule includes a new three-day Stockholm H₂O Innovation Weekend, running from August 26-28 at Strandvägskajen. Organized by the City of Stockholm and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the forum aims to bridge the divide between experts and the general public, while driving greater engagement in sustainable water projects.

SurfCleaner is set to exhibit a selection of its ‘world-first’ water treatment devices throughout Stockholm H₂O Innovation Weekend. Company Founder and Head of Corporate Relations Christina Lundbäck will further outline the company’s mission, values and future vision on Friday, August 26 between 11am-12noon CET.

“SurfCleaner welcomes the return of World Water Week, and we look forward to participating in the newly created Stockholm H₂O Innovation Weekend. This important annual event provides a platform to discuss new ways of managing water and its role supporting some of humanity’s greatest future challenges. We anticipate an open and engaging dialogue covering a broad range of topics from food security and health to agriculture, industry, technology, biodiversity and the climate crisis.

As a company, SurfCleaner is passionate about making a positive, direct and sustainable impact on the environment. We are aiming to address a significant challenge with more than 80pc of used water currently going untreated around the globe. Through the use of our innovative technology, we can eradicate a wide range of surface water contaminants including oil, diesel, petrol, plastics, sludge and other pollutants. Huge opportunities lie across multiple sectors including energy, maritime, tunnelling, mining and heavy industries to name but a few.”

SurfCleaner continues to drive strong growth in domestic markets with a roster of clients including Ragn-Sells, the Swedish Coast Guard, Preem Refinery, Esso Refinery, Sonatrach Refinery, Exxon Mobil and Ports of Stockholm. The firm is also expanding rapidly overseas with 25 global partnerships expected by 2023.

In order to stage live product demonstrations, at the forthcoming Stockholm H₂O Innovation Weekend, SurfCleaner has teamed up with fellow Swedish environmental services specialist PK Produkter. Using an Oil containment boom for spill response from PK Produkter’s waste tool range, SurfCleaner’s novel display will use popcorn to help simulate an oil-spill scenario. The set-up will illustrate the effectiveness of its hybrid skimmer separator technology, which not only removes, but also separates and recovers contaminants from the water surface, creating a recycling capacity to support the circular economy.

“With World Water Week being one of the world’s most influential water conferences, with so much expertise present, we feel that it is our responsibility to try to reach beyond the water community. We can only achieve a sustainable future and a more water-wise world if everyone is onboard, and Stockholm H2O is designed to bridge between the experts and the public, in a fun, informative, and entertaining way.”

Gabriela Suhoschi, director World Water Week and Prizes

World Water Week will attract a diverse delegation from decision-makers, business leaders and city planners, to activists and researchers across the world. The forum also provides an important meeting place for policymakers and institutions to accelerate progress in international processes related to water, development and climate.

This year’s theme is “Seeing the unseen: The value of water”, with sessions grouped under three categories including the value of water for people and development, the financial and economic value of water, and the value of water for nature and climate.

“The city’s new innovation weekend around water, Stockholm H₂O, is important to inspire and activate more people in the work of securing the cycle for this vital resource. The city wants to highlight all the fantastic projects and initiatives together with exhibitions with a water theme and entertainment on one of Stockholm’s fantastic quays.”

Anna König Jerlmyr, finance citizen councilor in Stockholm

“Stockholm has a natural connection to water with our proximity to nature and as a city of islands. We are a city that takes long-term sustainability seriously, and we look forward to inviting the public to discover and explore actors and their ground-breaking new solutions.”

Kaj Linde, project manager at Visit Stockholm
